Özet

Purpose: This study was planned to determine the visual perception impairment of children with low vision and to investigate the effectiveness of occupational therapy program. Material and methods: The study was carried out on 40 children diagnosed with low vision who were randomly recruited into two groups. Figure ground perception (FGP), copying figure (CF) and position in space (PS) subtests of Ayres visual perception evaluation were performed. Reading and writing performance were evaluated. The activities of daily living were examined by means of the Northwick Park Independence Index (NPII). An individual training program was planned with their low vision aids. The first group was treated in physiotherapy department. The same activities were given as a home program to the second group. The program was applied 3 limes per week for 3 months. Results: When comparing pre and post test scores of CF, FGP, PS, NPII, reading and writing performance, a significant increase was found in both groups (p<0.05). A significant increase was found in favour of the study group in FGP, PS scores and reading performance (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that the occupational therapy programs, which consisted of visual perception training had increased the academical skills and independence of daily living activities.
