Abstract

Although cyanide is a hazardous substance and toxic pollutant, it exists in the environment as a product of industrial activities. Cyanide and its derivatives are used at textile, dye, fertilizer, pharmaceutical industry and the fields of metal extraction, mining, plating, photography, synthesis of organic materials, producing of disinfectant substance. Annually, these industries produce cyanide wastes above about three billion liter. Furthermore, cyanide generates also biologically despite of the fact that it is extremely toxic and microorganisms, one part of ecosystem, detoxify it. When the applications where the cyanide are used and the effects of cyanide on living thinks are taken into account, treatment of polluted environments is seen to be especially significant. In this review study, in addition to chemical and toxic properties of cyanide, the data related to biological methods at cyanide degradation and potential microorganisms are presented.
