Özet

Implant-supported prostheses for edentulous patients emerged with the development of implantology and osseointegration, significantly enhancing masticatory function and patient satisfaction. Overdentures, defined as prostheses supported by natural teeth or implants, address limitations of complete dentures, particularly in cases of severe alveolar bone resorption. Research supports using at least two implants for mandibular overdentures and four for maxillary overdentures to preserve bone and reduce resorption rates. Indications for implant-supported overdentures include large resection defects, inadequate bone support, gag reflex, and economic constraints. Retention in these prostheses is achieved through bar retainers or non-splinted attachments, which can be less invasive and require fewer implants than fixed prostheses. Bar retainers are suitable for patients with significant vertical loss or who seek increased stability but may not be ideal for those with limited space. Non-splinted retainers, such as ball, magnet, locator, and telescopic types, offer advantages like easy production and lower complication risks, though they can suffer from retention loss and require careful selection based on various factors like implant positioning and patient needs. New systems of non-splinted retainers have recently been developed such as: Locator, Locator R-Tx, Locator Fixed, Clicq, CM-Loc, Novaloc, OT Equator. The aim of this review is to examine the characteristics of contemporary independent attachment systems.
