We are writing with regard to the Academic Radiology article entitled, "Ultrasonographic Size of the Thenar Muscles of the Nondominant Hand Correlates with Total Body Lean Mass in Healthy Subjects" by Pedrianes-Martin et al. (1). The authors report that ultrasonographic examination of the nondominant thenar musculature is a fast and simple way of assessing total body fat-free mass, showing a good correlation with body composition, hand grip strength and arm muscular area. We congratulate the authors for their effort in drawing attention to the use of ultrasound for assessing total body fat-free mass.
