Özet

Occupants usually neglect to adjust their head restraints. When the head restraints of rear seats are left at their highest position, the rear view of the car as seen through the rear view mirror of the driver, is obstructed. This study presents an automatically adjustable head restraint for rear seats which actively adjusts the height of the head restraint according to the sitting height of the occupant. Rear impact simulations are also run using a rear seat model and an average male occupant model. In these simulations, the head restraint is in its lowest position or it is about 2 cm above the head centre of gravity. In another case, the top of the head restraint is at the same level with the top of the head. With increased height of the head restraint, whiplash risk is significantly reduced. Rear seats can be easily retrofitted with the automatically adjustable head-restraint presented in this paper.
