These nominal values are the design criteria to obtain a vehicle with good crashworthiness. These design parameters for crash safety include the deceleration and deformation of the vehicle, forces and accelerations that humans can withstand and the required stiffness of the vehicle. A group of 10 passenger cars with different mass and brand, are selected from the crash test database of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The selected cars which were manufactured between 2012 and 2017, earned five star rating in full-width rigid barrier (FWRB) frontal impact test. In this study, the data which are not available in the crash test reports, are processed to obtain values for the design criteria that are critical to obtain a car with good crashworthiness in frontal impacts. The values of the design parameters are statistically analysed and the corresponding design criteria are suggested. A one-dimensional lumped mass car model is also utilised to establish the relationships between design parameters both theoretically and experimentally. Since the data from the best performing cars are used, design criteria for these design parameters are obtained which can be very useful for a novice or an experienced engineer in the field of crash safety.
