Abstract

Electric cars currently constitute 15% of all passenger cars used in the world. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, governments are also subsidising the sale of electric cars. Autonomous cars are seen as the future mode of transportation and there is a great deal of research and trials in this field. In the recent years, customers are purchasing more and more sport utility vehicles (SUVs). However, there are some concerns about this current trend in transportation regarding autonomous electric SUVs in terms of crash safety, carbon emissions, environmental effects, public transport, pedestrian safety, electricity production and recycling of batteries. A survey is conducted involving 103 participants from Turkey, to understand the public awareness and views on the key issues regarding autonomous electric SUVs. The results of this study indicate that several measures need to be taken to ensure public safety.
