Linguistic Appearances of the Phenomenon of Mentalisation and the Possibilities It Offers to Reader Experience in the Context of Migration Theme: The Example of "If I Become a Bird and Fly Home"

Skills to understand another's mental state, such as empathy, require recognizing one's emotional and social contexts. Fiction narratives provide the reader with simulated life experiences, enabling the reader to perceive a reality that encompasses such contexts. Children's literature plays an important role in developing healthy emotions and reactions by allowing children to experience different life experiences through fictional narratives. The specific textual formations of fictional narratives and various linguistic structures support the development of these reactions that may occur in the reader. Mental state verbs are also one of the clearly marked linguistic structures that provide access to another's mind and state of consciousness. With this perspective, in this study, mental state verbs in the work titled "If I Were a Bird, If I Fly to My Home", which focuses on the theme of migration and immigration as a contemporary experience, were tried to be described in terms of the possibility of arousing an empathic effect on the reader. In line with the purpose of the study, first of all, the concept of mentalization and related concepts were explained, then narrative empathy (narrative empathy) was mentioned within the scope of cognitive literature research, and the research findings reached at the end of the study were presented with examples.
