Since the Tanzimat Reform era, Turkish poetry has changed it direction being
influenced by the West. From that time on, poets have written poetic writings and presented
point of view from both their own poetry and other poets poetry. This era which started with
Şinasi, continued Namık Kemal; after names like Ziya Paşa, Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem; in the
Edebiyat-ı Cedide era mainly Tevfik Fikret and Cenap Şahabettin published articles about
poetry; and after the II. Constitutionalism period Ahmet Haşim and Yahya Kemal were among
the names that made the most evaluations on poetry. Celâl Sılay was one of the names who
made evaluations on poetry and wrote poetic writings during this period. With the first
generation of the Public Era, the understanding of art changed which is possible to see in
articled and poetry. In this area, Celâl Sılay is the person who talks about poetry and writes
poetic writings the most. Celâl Sılay who was the most notable person with his poetry in the
middle of 1930s not only evaluated the poems that were sent to him from the 1940s to 1970s in
the “Poetry Colums” of magazines but also commented on poetry in many media outlets.
However, although many people studied Celâl Sılay’s poetry, noon has studied Celâl Sılay’s
views on poetry yet. Therefore the main subject of this article is study Celal Sılay as a poetry
criticism. In this study Celâl Sılay’s views on many aspects of Turkish poetry will be investigated
and his contrubitions to Turkish poetry from 1930s to 1970s evaluated.
