Özet

Suicide is a multi-dimensional and complex behavior in which biological, psychiatric, psychological and social-cultural factors are interactive. In recent years it has been seen that both accomplished suicides and suicide attempts are at rising trend in a lot of countries, particularly among young population. This situation marks that works for suicide prevention which have been carried out with various challenges will gain gradually further importance. Works for suicide prevention are a significant part of services carried out by multi-discipliner teams on the field of mental health and in implementations of social worker who are a member of the team of mental health it is highly possible to come across with patterns of suicide behavior. However, information about implementation of social work in works for suicide prevention is extremely limited in the Turkish literature. The main objective of this two-part study is to make known the role and functions of social work profession in suicide prevention works. In this respect, primarily being inspired by the preventive approach on the public health, suicide prevention works have been handled at three levels in it, as primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Later, it has been emphasized on roles of social work to prevent suicide in terms of the three different prevention levels.
