Özet

Purpose: Muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) is a useful indicator of muscle energy metabolism. Although it is known that energy metabolism is impaired in muscular dystrophies (MD), there is limited information on SmO2. This study aimed to determine the SMO2 value in children with MD and establish its relationship with functional performance.

Method: Ten children with MD and ten typically developing (TD) children were included in this study. Demographic characteristics were obtained. SmO2 was measured in the rectus femoris muscles on both sides of the body using a Moxy Monitor. SmO2 was recorded during both a resting period and a six-minute walk test (6MWT).

Results: The mean age of the children with DMD and the TD children was 11.55 ±3.13 and 11.12 ±2.08 years, respectively (p>0.05). The two groups did not differ in terms of resting SmO2 (p>0.05). The SmO2 was lower during the 6MWT than the during rest in children with MD (6MWT: 53.78% vs rest: 58.48%, p=0.036). The SmO2 of TD children was similar both during the 6MWT and at rest (6MWT: 59.50% vs rest: 60.33%, p>0.05). There was no correlation between SmO2 and 6MWT distance in children with MD (p>0.05).

Conclusion: These results suggest that children with MD are unable to meet the increased demand placed on their energy metabolism unlike healthy children. However, SmO2 may not provide additional insight into functional performance in MD.
