Economic feasibility analysis of the optimal biomethane facility in Türkiye

Abstract
Biomethane, a renewable and sustainable fuel, is gaining significant global attention due to its potential to
enhance waste management, reduce carbon emissions, and maintain cost competitiveness. As countries seek
alternative energy sources to mitigate climate change, biomethane stands out as a viable solution with both
environmental and economic benefits. This study evaluates the feasibility of establishing a biomethane facility in
Türkiye by analyzing detailed cost data from 17 existing biogas plants currently generating electricity. Various
biomethane production technologies were assessed across different scales, identifying Pressurized Water
Scrubbing as the only economically viable option due to its efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Site selection was
based on raw material availability, with Aksaray, Çorum, and Kars emerging as the most suitable locations, given
their high supply of layer chicken and cattle manure. The proposed facility is projected to achieve net annual
carbon savings of 81,952 tons, equivalent to approximately $15,161,094 in social benefits, contributing to
Türkiye’s renewable energy transition and emission reduction goals.
