Novel tetrahydrocarbazole and carbazole-based chemosensors have been synthesized, and their interactions with various anions (F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, AcO-, CN-, H2PO4-, NO3-, ClO4-, and HSO4-) have been investigated in organic and aqueous environments. As a result of the reversibility studies and H-1 NMR experiments, it has been determined that the interaction mechanisms are di-deprotonation. Moreover, chemosensors can be used successfully to determine CN- and OH- anions in an aqueous medium. Experimental studies were supported with density functional theory calculations.
