Pycnogenol, natural dried extract obtained from the bark of Pinus pinaster, is commonly consumed as a dietary food supplement due to its strong antioxidant and antiinflamatory effects. It is believed that some natural compounds might reduce the development of cancer through the antioxidant activity. The studies have supported the therapeutic role of Pycnogenol. Pycnogenol does not have toxic effect when consumed at the recommended doses, however, it should be noted that its high doses or long-term consumption of Pycnogenol may have toxic effects. It is predicted that the further studies needs to be performed to clarfy the mechanisms of Pycnogenol. In this review, the information on the pharmacokinetic and pharmacological properties of Pycnogenol and mechanisms of action, toxicity and safety of Pycnogenol were presented.
