In this study, the fictional male narrator character in The Ravishing of Lol Stein and the female autobiographical narrator in The North China Lover has been compared through the use of reported speech so as to reveal each narrator's ethos. Based on the information from the readings, the male narrator's desperation towards madness prevents him from putting a distance between him self and the characters. The female narrator of The North China Lover aims at showing and announcing the events through a cinematographic view. Although the female narrator displays her subjectivity in the novel, she managed to distance herself from the characters.
