Cosmetic dentistry is a practice that is not necessary for health but is performed at the request of people and to enhance ap- pearance. This practice has increased in recent years and from a socio- logical perspective in the modern world it has some representation. Cosmetic dentistry symbolizes people’s investment in themselves, so- cial status and welfare. Media and social media disseminate this per- spective and induce a new culture of smiles. People has unrealistic expectations and society has new beauty standards. It is thought that to comprehend the psychosocial side of cosmetic dentistry and the ex- pression of the body for modern-day people will offer a different per- spective to dentists who frequently perform these practices. Cosmetic dentistry is a very controversial field from an ethical perspective be- cause of psychological and social indications and without medical in- dications. It is related to mental and social health and needs to be discussed with context and its detail. On the other hand, feminist bioethics examines medicine and medical services from the female viewpoint and mentions the issues other than male-dominated ethical principles that traditional bioethics excludes. Therefore, evaluating cos- metic dentistry from a feminist bioethics perspective will contribute to traditional bioethics. Consequently, the purpose of this article is to en- sure that the feminist bioethical evaluation of cosmetic dentistry pro- vides ethical guidance to dentists and to offer a holistic understanding by mentioning the story of the body and the imposition of beauty.
Kozmetik diş hekimliği; sağlık için gerekli olmayan fakat kişi- lerin isteğiyle ve görünümün iyile ştirilmesi amacıyla yapılan uygula- malardır. Son yıllarda artan bu uygulamalar, sosyolojik açıdan modern dünyada belli temsillere sahiptir. Kozmetik diş hekimliği; kişinin ken- dine yatırımını, sosyal statüsünü ve refahını simgelemektedir. Medya ve sosyal medya ise bu bakış açısının yayılımını sağlamaktadır ve yeni bir gülüş kültürü oluşmasına sebep olmaktad ır. Kişilerde gerçekçi olma- yan beklentiler ve toplumda yeni bir güzellik standard ı oluşmaktadır. Kozmetik diş hekimliğinin, bu psikososyal doğasının ve günümüz mo- dern insanı için bedenin ne ifade etti ğinin kavranmasının bu uygula- maları sıklıkla yapan di ş hekimlerine farklı bir bakış açısı sunacağı düşünülmektedir. Tıbbi endikasyon olmadan psikolojik ve sosyal en- dikasyonlarla yapılan kozmetik di ş hekimliği bu yönüyle etik aç ıdan oldukça tartışmalıdır. Ruhsal ve sosyal sa ğlıkla ilişkili olan kozmetik diş hekimliği, bağlamıyla beraber detaylıca ele alınması gereken bir ko- nudur. Feminist biyoetik ise tıp kurumunu ve sağlık hizmetlerini kadın bakış açısıyla ele almaktad ır ve geleneksel biyoeti ğin dışarıda bırak- tığı, erkek egemen etik ilkelerin dışındaki konulara değinebilmektedir. Bu nedenle kozmetik diş hekimliğinin feminist biyoetik açıdan değer- lendirilmesinin, geleneksel biyoetik değerlendirmeye katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir. Sonuç olarak bu makalenin amacı; kozmetik diş he- kimliğinin feminist biyoetik açıdan değerlendirilmesinin, diş hekimle- rine etik açıdan yol gösterici olmasını sağlamak ve bedenin hikâyesine, güzelliğin dayatılmasına da değinerek bütünlüklü bir bakış sunmaktır.
