in: Tenable Engineering for a Sustainable Future: Integrating SDGs and Natural Resource Utilization, Elsevier, pp.323-341, 2026
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) presents a growing global health burden closely intertwined with unsustainable healthcare practices and resource-intensive treatments. This chapter explores innovative, environmentally conscious approaches to kidney disease prevention and management, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goal #3, good health and well-being. Emphasizing prevention through lifestyle interventions and improved management of diabetes and hypertension, it also addresses the urgent need to reduce the ecological footprint of renal replacement therapies. Strategies include promoting peritoneal dialysis and transplantation, optimizing water and energy use in hemodialysis, prioritizing recycle and reuse of water, adopting telehealth, and integrating eco-friendly materials and technologies. By bridging nephrology with principles of sustainable engineering and resource conservation, this chapter advocates for a greener future in kidney care, where medical excellence supports both human and planetary health.
