Antimicrobial, Anti-Quorum Sensing, and Antibiofilm Potentials of Newly Isolated Streptomyces spp.

Streptomyces has always stood out among the microorganisms with their extraordinary capacity to synthesize a significant amount of bioactive metabolites. As a result, the focus of this research is on investigating the biological activities of Streptomyces isolates. A total of 135 Streptomyces spp. were isolated from soil samples obtained from various provinces of Turkey. Antimicrobial, anti-quorum sensing and antibiofilm activities were all tested in two steps. MHD88, MHD62, MHD33, MHD6, MHD1203, and MHD13 isolates showed antimicrobial activity against at least three test microorganisms. However, none of the isolates demonstrated activity against Serratia marcescens. A remarkable finding is that the MHD13 isolate has antimicrobial activity against 9 of the 12 test microorganisms. Final screening showed that MHD62 and MHD6 from four effective isolates had considerable anti-quorum sensing action. MHD122 and MHD88 isolates, on the other hand, exhibited significant antibiofilm activity. 16S rRNA sequences of isolates were analyzed for identification, and the findings revealed that they belonged to the genus Streptomyces with 97.3–98.81 percent similarity. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) was used to explore the chemical components of secondary metabolites. The analysis revealed a total of 94 distinct compounds in the extract compositions. This research suggests that bioactive metabolites derived from the Streptomyces species might be useful not just as antibiotics but also as antipathogenic drugs.
