Özet

A three-dimensional numerical study was applied for a vertical slot-brush fishway. In the numerical model, the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) coupled with the Darcy-Forchheimer law, in which brush blocks were modeled as homogeneous porous media, was employed. The numerical model results were validated for three-dimensional velocities that were measured with acoustic Doppler velocimetry in a full-scale physical model. The results revealed that the LES-porous media approach can simulate velocity distributions with good accuracy, which was validated by coefficient of determination values. According to the simulation results, the maximum velocity and average pool depth errors were lower than 15%. Numerical simulations suggest that bristles have a positive effect on the reduced velocity area for the ascending fish that have low swimming capacity. The enhanced vertical slot fishway (VSF) design exhibits a higher proportion of suitable pool volume for multiple fish species in comparison with the VSF without brush blocks. The numerical analysis shows that the large recirculation zone area in the pool is reduced by 80% after the installation of brush blocks. The proposed numerical modeling approach is expected to make contributions to the retrofitting studies of VSFs for the upstream migration of multiple fish species, particularly small-bodied fish.
