In this study, we present an unprecedented reaction of BOPHY. Although tetrabrominated BOPHY (BrBPH) is known to give a substitution reaction with amines, we found that this reaction proceeds through an addition mechanism in the dilute medium. Upon this reaction, the absorption and fluorescence bands of BrBPH decrease dramatically. We used this newly presented reaction for the fluorimetric detection and quantification of amines. BrBPH-adsorbed TLC plates were also utilized for the determination of food spoilage.
