Probing the Relationship: A Case Study on Learners' CodeSwitching Beliefs and English Self-Efficacy

This article reports a study investigating the relationship between EFL learners' language switching beliefs and their perceptions of English self-efficacy. In the field of foreign language education, learners' attitudes and beliefs towards language learning are recognized as one of the important aspects of the language learning process. While previous research has explored learners' codeswitching beliefs in various educational settings, there is a noticeable dearth of studies investigating the correlation between learners' code-switching beliefs and their self-perceived ability in English. This study examined the impact of learners' beliefs about their code-switching ability (i.e. the ability to switch from one language to another) on their perceptions of self-efficacy in using English effectively. The research was conducted via a survey method among foreign language learners from various sociodemographic backgrounds. The questionnaire included items measuring code switching beliefs and statements assessing selfefficacy levels. The obtained data were analyzed using quantitative analysis methods. The findings revealed that students with high language-switching beliefs also had high English self-efficacy beliefs. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between code switching beliefs and both self-efficacy beliefs and students' overall motivation. The findings of this study have significant ramifications for educators, as enhancing language switching beliefs can enhance students' overall language proficiency and motivation.
