Özet
Objective: Many dermatological diseases have oral mucosal findings. Oral mucosal lesions (OML) sometimes may be the only clue to make a correct diagnosis about an obscure disease. There is only a limited number of studies about OML that had been conducted in Turkey. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence and factors affecting the occurence of OML in the general population of Turkey. Material and Methods: A total number of 1.670 patients (950 females, 720 males) were enrolled in this study. Detailed information about patients' characteristics such as age, accompanying diseases, drug history, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, dental status such as dental filling, crown and prosthesis, dermatological diseases and, if present, OML were recorded and detailed statistical analyses were done. Results: The overall prevalence of OML was 37.8% (females=34.8%, males=41.6%). Coated tongue was the most common OML (6.7%), followed by fissured tongue (4.4%) and Fordyce granules (3.9%). Coated tongue was significantly higher among males, middle-aged adults (35-54 years) and moderate smokers (20-39 cigarettes/day). No significant differences in the prevalences of OML were observed in regard to alcohol consumption. Venous lake, denture stomatitis and glossitis were significantly associated with old age group (65 years and older). In this population, a statistically significantly greater percentage of male patients had candidiasis and Behçet’s disease whereas glossitis was significantly more prevalent among females. Conclusion: So far, many studies have been conducted on OML in different countries and regions. However, few of them have been governed by dermatologists. We assume that studies like ours may provide useful information in the classification and management of OML.
