Abstract

In this paper, a new hybrid method is presented to model electromagnetic wave propagation over an irregular terrain by using the Two-Way Split-Step Parabolic Equation (2W-SSPE), which is capable of handling both forward and backward scattered waves in long range electromagnetic problems, and the Method of Moments (MoM), which can model the back-scattering from an irregular terrain by using integral equations in the frequency domain. Since the 2W-SSPE method employs staircasing approach for modeling slanted/curved surfaces, a new hybrid SSPE+ MoM method is proposed to decrease the staircasing error and to improve the performance of the SSPE method. The results of the hybrid SSPE+ MoM method are compared with those of 2W-SSPE and those obtained with another hybrid method which is Geometric Optic (GO) + Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD).
