The aim of this study was to examine the performance of Turkish children on various metalinguistic tasks. The sample consisted of 65 children between 3 and 8 years of age. The Mean Length of Utterance (MLU) was used as the criterion for normal language development. All children were given 5 different metalinguistic tasks which included word, syllable and phoneme segmentation and finding words with a given initial and final phoneme. Results showed that the performance on metalinguistic tasks increases with age and varies according to the task. The relation between metalinguistic development and reading ability has also been discussed.
