Özet

Engraving, which is considered among the printing arts, is one of the most important art types of history. The basis of engraving lies in transferring a design incised into a plate onto any surface by means of paints. The subject of this study is the engravings of Ankara made during the Ottoman period. Due to the increasing interest in the East and travels getting easier, it is known that many travelers and artists went to many cities of the Ottoman Empire, especially Istanbul. Furthermore, Ankara had been one of the cities which travelers and artists visited. This study encompasses the engravings on Ankara in travel books, encyclopedias, books, national and international newspapers and museum collections of the period. The visual documents of Ankara during the Ottoman period are scarce. Within this limited visual memory, Ankara engravings, dating back to the 18th century, hold a special place. The aim of this study is to understand Ankara through the engravings of the Ottoman period. Accordingly, the landscapes, architectural works, animals and endemic plants of Ankara depicted in the engravings, will be examined. Furthermore, emphasis will be placed on how the urban fabric and daily life of the period are reflected in these engravings.
