Abstract

Barynotus (Systomus) verhoeffi Battalgil is a synonym of Labeobarbus chantrei Sauvage, as already shown by Krupp (1985). It does not belong to Barynotus, Systomus or Barbus, but to Carasobarbus, which is a valid genus, that also comprises four other species luteus, canis, apoensis and exulatus. A comprehensive description of C. chantrei from the River Asi (= Orontes) in Turkey is given; the species is closest to C. canis, two other west Asian barbel are considered valid: Kosswigobarbus and Mesopotamichthys.
