Özet

This study seeks to show how identity formation, deaf sports, and sign language interpreting are intertwined. The study focuses on a recently drafted project proposal for the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Turkiye to further enhance conditions, visibility and quality of sign language interpreters (hereafter SLIs) working in deaf sports endeavours and events. Arguing that the training of SLIs for deaf sports lies at the intersection between sociology and translation studies, the article adopts a sociological perspective on translation and interpreting pedagogy, with a specific focus on the training of SLIs, including CODAs (child of deaf adult(s) working for deaf sports players. The study concludes that the proposed training model for sign language interpreting can form a professional habitus that embraces the dispositions and skills to be acquired by SLIs through socialization and professional training. In such countries as Turkiye where SLIs are generally either CODAs or proficient users of sign language, such pilot training projects gain the utmost significance.
