Translating Türkiye’s women in a transnational context: the case of Tales from the Expat Harem

Özet
This article examines Tales from the Expat Harem from a translation studies perspective. The anthology is authored by a group of migrant women who translate Türkiye, both linguistically and culturally. Arguing that their translations intersect in various ways with feminist translation practices, the study dwells on the common threads between imagology, feminism, and translation studies to analyse how the image of Türkiye’s women is influenced by the narratives crafted by the writers. The study analyses four select testimonies, noting that the different forms of cultural translation featuring in the tales lend credence to the empowering promise of the book. The article ultimately demonstrates that, although distinct forms of cultural translation serve to challenge stereotypes, exoticizing images in some tales weaken their potential for transnational solidarity.
