Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal problems in childhood. Cisapride is potentially useful in the treatment of chronic constipation, as it induces propulsive motor activity in the jejunum and accelerate postprandial small bowel transit time. The aim of this study is to show the effect of cisapride and to compare it with a placebo in patients with constipation of unknown etiology. Twenty patients with chronic constipation were enrolled into the study. Ten patients (Group 1) were given cisapride (1 mg/kg/day, divided into 3 doses) for six weeks and the other 10 patients (Group 2) were given a placebo on the same schedule. Patients were evaluated at the beginning and at the skin week with regard to bowel movements per week, and total and segment transit time. At the end of the study, bowel movements per week were slightly higher in Group 1. Although statistically insignificant, total transit time decreased in Group 1 whereas it increased in Group 2.
