Abstract

In this study, the effects of steel mould thickness and sample diameter on the chill formation tendency and chill depth were investigated. For this purpose, casting process was carried out with using steel coolers having different thickness (5, 15, 20, 30, 50) and sample diameters (10, 30, and 50).The Samples were characterized metallographically and the hardness profiles were determined to evaluate chill depth. Experimental studies showed that homogeneous chill depth and dispersion can be obtained on the surface of samples with defining proper mould thickness. In addition, the mould thickness significantly change chill morphology.
