Estetik bir restorasyon elde edebilmek için gerekli temel unsurlardan biri renk seçimidir. Diş hekimliğinde renk seçimi yöntemleri skala görsel ve dijital olmak üzere 2 gruba ayrılabilir. Hastanın dişi ile standart skalaların karşılaştırılması yoluyla yapılan görsel renk seçimi klinik diş hekimliğinde en sık uygulanan yöntemdir. Ancak bu, subjektif bir değerlendirme yöntemidir ve ortamın aydınlatması, hekimin deneyimi, yaşı ve renk körlüğü gibi insan gözünün hatalı algılamasına sebep olan fizyolojik farklılıklar hatalı renk seçimine sebep olabilir. Görsel renk seçiminin dezavantajları sebebiyle dijital kamera, kolorimetre ve spektrofotometreler kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. Diş rengi seçiminin cihazlarla yapımı, hekimden ve aydınlatma koşullarından bağımsız objektif yöntemlerdir. Ancak bu yöntemlerin de translüsent materyallerin renk ölçümlerinin hassas yapılamaması gibi kendine özgü dezavantajları vardır. Doğal diş rengine uygun restorasyonların yapılabilmesi için, yöntem veya yöntemler birlikte hekim tarafından seçilerek uygulanmalıdır.

Color matching is one of the key facts to achieve an esthetic restoration. There are 2 methods of color matching in dentistry; visual and digital. Visual color matching by comparison of a patient tooth with a standard shade guide is the most frequently applied method in clinical dentistry. However, this method is considered subjective and physical variables such as external light conditions and physiological variables such as age, fatigue of human eye and color blindness lead to inconsistencies. Due to disadvantages of visual color assessment, computerized analyses of digital photography and instruments such as spectrophotometers and colorimeters has been introduced to dentistry. Instrumental assessment of tooth color allows an objective method that is independent from viewing conditions and examiner. However, there are inherent shortcomings of these methods as inaccurate results for evaluating color of translucent objects. Appropriate color matching method or combination of these methods should be applied to duplicate the color of natural teeth for a prosthetic restoration.
