Abstract
Achieving lifelike aesthetics in dental restorations relies heavily on accurate tooth shade selection. Traditional visual methods, although widely used, often suffer from subjectivity and inconsistencies. In response, digital technologies such as colorimeters, spectrophotometers, hybrid systems, digital cameras, and intraoral scanners have been increasingly integrated into clinical workflows. Spectrophotometers, in particular, have demonstrated superior accuracy and repeatability, making them the gold standard for objective shade matching. Intraoral scanners are also gaining traction due to advancements in optical resolution and software algorithms, though their accuracy can vary depending on the device model and calibration system. Digital photography offers valuable visual documentation when standardized, while hybrid systems combining imaging and spectrophotometry aim to improve consistency. Despite technological improvements, no single method guarantees universally reliable results under all clinical conditions. Therefore, combining digital techniques with visual evaluation remains essential to enhance precision in shade selection. Ongoing research and standardization efforts are essential to further enhance the clinical reliability and integration of these technologies.
