Abstract
Metal diborides are favored for extremely high-temperature environments because of their high melting temperatures and exceptional mechanical features. Challenges for instance, poor fracture toughness have led to the development of composites. Research aims to enhance fracture resistance and other properties through refining processing techniques and microstructural development. High-entropy ceramics, particularly diborides, show promise in hypersonic vehicle components and solar power concentrators, but addressing engineering challenges remains crucial. Significant efforts have tackled processing challenges to improve fracture properties, oxidation resistance, and thermal shock resilience. Metal borides are of considerable importance in both aerospace and automotive industries, offering high strength, thermal stability, lightweight nature, and resistance to extreme conditions. They find applications in turbine blades, rocket nozzles, heat shields, and corrosion-resistant coatings. Metal borides are also used in nuclear industries as effective radiation shielding materials. They exhibit versatile properties, with research focusing on understanding their magnetic properties, particularly in transition metal borides, which show variations from weak paramagnetism to robust ferromagnetism.
