Abstract

A new tridesmosidic cycloartane type glycoside, cephalotoside A was isolated from the roots of Astragahus cephalotes var. brevicalyx in addition to the known glycosides cyclocanthosides A, D and E. The structure of the new compound was determined by spectral (IR, H-1- and C-13-NMR, and FABMS) and chemical (acetylation) methods and established as 3 beta-(beta-D-xylopyranosyl)oxy-16 beta-(beta-D-glucopyranosyl)oxy-24- (beta-D-xylopyranosyl)oxy-cycloarlane-6 alpha,25-diol.
