Özet

All education systems are developed on two foundations. These are the culture that provides the accumulation of knowledge and the communication that enables the dissemination of knowledge. Culture and communication constitute two important foundations in science education as well. Science culture constitutes the nature of science, scientific knowledge, methods and techniques, that is, the scientific process and its content. Communication, on the other hand, determines how scientific information produced, the tools and methods developed can be learned, taught, shared and which members of the society can use it. Scientific terms, concepts, symbols, formulas, and expressions provide both the development of scientific culture and enable scientific communication to take place. Therefore, multicultural science education can be achieved by establishing a successful science culture and communication environment in science classrooms. The main idea, outlined in this article, presents two basic approaches. The first is the approach to multicultural science education, how science education should be in the future. The other is that multicultural view of science should be included in the training processes of science teachers and students. In this respect, it is expected that the present study will contribute to science teachers and our education system in two main aspects. First, the aim of this study is to discuss and review the concepts of multiculturalism and multicultural science education in terms of prominent theories in the scientific literature. Second, this article is also a focused position paper emphasizing the importance and necessity of multicultural science education for our education system. In the beginning the concepts of culture, multiculturalism and society are examined in terms of education. Later, the philosophy of multicultural science education and theories were emphasized in terms of curricula, teachers and students. In the last part, it has been stated that multicultural science education is necessary for our country in terms of its gains and benefits.
