Özet

The purpose of medical specialty training is to provide clinical, theoretical, and practical education to help residents acquire the competencies, attitudes, and behaviors; fundamental research knowledge; and management skills necessary to deliver effective healthcare services. To ensure a consistent standard among residents in the areas covered by the training, various bodies—including certification boards—operate within the framework of public and/or professional organization initiatives. Changes in the content and the prevalence of global health issues have influenced medical specialty training and highlighted the need to review educational processes. This article presents the critical role of competency boards in Türkiye and future suggestions along with basic information and a historical overview of medical specialty training. In brief, competency boards for specialty and subspecialty training have been actively working in coordination with the Turkish Medical Association since 2004 in Türkiye. However, there is a need for a model that will facilitate the official recognition of specialty and subspecialty competency boards within the health system.
