High school students’ use of the digital educational platform in the chemistry course: a mixed methods study

Özet

This study aims to examine the high school students’ online digital education platform usage and engagement behaviours for chemistry courses, and their chemistry achievement during the distance learning period. The explanatory sequential design, a mixed method, was used to achieve the research objectives. The students used the digital education platform called Educational Informatics Network (‘Eğitim Bilişim Ağı’ in Turkish, hereafter referred to as EBA), which supports the formal education process in Türkiye, and is reliable for K-12 levels, and provides individualised learning environments. The study group comprises the chemistry achievement grades of 176 high school students, as well as documents related to the use of EBA and students who voluntarily participated in interviews. The results of this study were discussed in the context of students’ use of the EBA digital platform for chemistry course, the correlations between their performance in chemistry and their use of digital platform, expectations, and recommendations. According to the results of the research, it is apparent today, when restricting education to classroom environment is inadequate, that digital educational platforms are important in students’ learning, reinforcement, and repetition and in raising their motivation for courses. Despite this, students also had criticisms of the platform and suggestions for its improvement.
