Abstract

The Finite Element Method (FEM) remains a cornerstone of computational electromagnetics (CEM) because of its geometric flexibility, robust treatment of complex materials, and natural compatibility with higher-order basis functions and multiphysics couplings. In the context of today's highly demanding CEM test problems - often arising at millimeter-wave frequencies and in antenna/metasurface-enabled platforms - practical success hinges on understanding when FEM is the right tool, and how to overcome its dominant bottlenecks in truncation, meshing, solver scalability, and multiscale complexity. This presentation provides an expert perspective on when FEM is advantageous (e.g., intricate 3D geometries, inhomogeneous/anisotropic media and strong near-field interactions) and what remains challenging.
