Abstract

Objective: Assessing the quality of life of males 15 years and older living in the Van province via short-form 36 (SF-36), and determining the factors affecting same were the aims of this study. Material and Methods: According to a pre-determined sample size, the study was planned to include 1000 households; in the end, 6008 people living in 935 households were interviewed. The total number of males older than 15 was 1762 in the sample population; however, only 863 were able to be contacted. The Van municipal information system was used for sampling. Results: Mean age of the study population was 35.6. Of the participants, 16.3% had graduated from high school. Married and unemployed participants were 67.3% and 58.4%, respectively. Social security holders and the newly immigrated were found to be 60.7% and 67.8%, respectively. The highest score among 8 levels of the SF-36 was in area of physical functioning (84.3 ± 23.86). Conclusion: Scores from nearly all sub-levels of SF-36 decreased with age. Socio-demographic factors determined to affect quality of life were high education level, being single, having a job, possessing social security and non-immigrant status.
