It is
known that different types of course books have been used in teaching German as
foreign language courses. In addition to the German course books that are
published in Germany and appeals to a large market, localized and totally local
German course books produced in other countries are also used to teach German
all over the world. The scientific research studies examining and investigating
the local course books are scrutinized in the present study. Based upon the
idea that course book analyses are as important as the quality of course books,
this research is concerned about the primary studies that directly examine the
local German course books. The literature review indicates that there are
substantial number of studies, conducted both in Turkey and abroad, which
explore the local German course books. This research aims to investigate the
findings of these earlier studies by means of meta-synthesis. In this sense,
identifying the most and the least frequently investigated features of German
course books and the obtained results of the prior research on these course
books are among the aims of this study. Accordingly, a systematic literature
review was conducted in different databases and search engines, and 60 primary
research studies held in Turkey and abroad between the years of 1986-2018,
which meets the selection criteria, were included in this meta-synthesis. These
60 studies included in the research are about the findings of the analysis of
200 local German course books. At the end of the coding procedure the data
listed under 11 themes were first synthesized among themselves, and then the
synthesis findings about the themes and the subthemes were figured out by
combining this first synthesis with the findings obtained through the
evaluation of the studies on course books. At the end of this study, a set of
suggestions to develop local German course books were provided based upon the
findings of this research.
