quality of life and adjustment to ostomy on permanent colostomy patients,
between November 28, 2016 and February 6, 2018 in Ankara Atatürk Training and
Research Hospital and Dr. Abdurrahman Yurtaslan Ankara Oncology Training and
Research Hospital General Surgery Clinics. Fifteen patiens for the experimental
group and 15 patiens for the control group were included in the study sample.
After tested for allergy, data collection forms and scales were applied to
experimental group patients whom to be opened permanent colostomy at least
three months before, suggestions about gas and odor decreasing measures were
given by information form, and they were trained in the direction of training
brochure about using lavender essential oil in ostomy bag. Second interview was
done in the direction of data collection forms and scales to experimental group
patients who used lavender essential oil in ostomy bag for a month at the end
of the month. Patients in the control group were interviewed in the direction of
data collection forms and scales, and suggestions about gas and odor decreasing
measures were given via information form. Second interview was done in the
direction of data collection forms and scales after a month. In this study,
lavender essential oil was used which exists in the market commercially. The
data were assessed by number, percentage, mean, standart deviation, Unpaired
t-test, Paired t-test and Chi square. There were no statistically significant
differences between the experimental and control groups in the study according
to their demographical characteristics; physical problems like gas, leakage,
sleep, skin problems and bath, and psychosocial problems like social
relationships, sexuality, worship, isolate oneself, body image distortion, fear
of unknown, loss of control, loss of self-confidence and difficulty in coping
at the end of a month (p>0,05). It was determined that experimental group
patients who used lavender essential oil in ostomy bag were statistically
significantly less experienced odor from physical problems versus control group
patients; had higher quality of life and ostomy adjustment then control group
patients (p<0,05). It is considered that this study will contribute to the
other studies which will be carried out on the different patient groups and
suggested to perform on patients who has different types of ostomies.
