This study aimed to examine the errors of 7th grade students in direct and inverse proportions within the creative drama process. The research was designed as a qualitative case study and was conducted with 30 7th grade students at a public school in Ankara. Two creative drama workshops were created for research: one focusing only on inverse proportions, and the other focusing on both inverse and direct proportion problems. The workshops, which were organised in line with expert opinions, were implemented three days apart. Data were collected through audio and video recordings taken during the workshop process and students’ working documents and analysed using descriptive and content analysis techniques. The results showed that students’ errors were grouped into three main categories: conceptual, procedural, and errors arising from not understanding the problem situation. The findings showed that the types of errors that emerged during the creative drama process overlapped with those in the literature. It was observed that different types of errors emerged at different stages of the workshop, and these errors were often confirmed and supported each other. In addition, it was determined that creative drama offers a learning process that allows students to identify and learn from their errors. As a result, it can be said that creative drama is an alternative and effective method to traditional approaches in identifying students’ errors. In this direction, it is recommended that creative dramas should be used to detect student errors in different mathematics topics and at various grade levels, and that drama-based studies should be conducted to identify misconceptions.
