Özet

In this study, an approach was developed to reveal suitable areas for shipyards using the Geographical Information System (GIS). Based on this purpose, criteria were determined with officials, and a number of representatives were interviewed from the existing shipyards. After this stage, more extensive and oriented criteria were developed for Iskenderun Bay, in Turkey. Turkey is a developing country with a coastline of 8333 km. Because of this fact, the shipbuilding market and related investments are recognized as crucial for global trade, the national economy, and also the marine policy in Turkey. In addition, more than 80% of the world trade by volume and more than 70% of economic value is being transported onboard ships and handled in the ports. Therefore, seaborne trade and related industries are of vital importance for shipyard site selection. It is a critical process where many screening criteria must be taken into account such as electricity power lines, hotels, security, population, topography, fault lines, etc. The siting criteria were prioritized by using one of the multi-criteria decision-making methods, the so-called Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), the screening criteria were evaluated in GIS and the Raster Calculation (RC) method was applied to support the decision-making process. As a result, the thematic maps were created and some possible and best-suited areas for shipyards' investments in Iskenderun Bay were proposed. It has been revealed that the proposed sites were already mainly being served as ports which clearly presented the legitimacy of this study's findings.
