Family is the basic unit of the society. The aim of the present research is to put forward how parents, living in central Kastamonu and its villages, with nuclear or extended families interpret family functions; and whether family structure and place of resident are influential over these parents' outlook on the functions of the family. Through random sampling method, 253 parents residing in central Kastamonu and its villages, whose children are kinderteners, first and second graders, were selected for the study. 'General Information Form' and 'Family Assessment Device (FAD) were designed by the researchers and utilized as data collection tools. SPSS 13.0 was used in data analysis, and demographic information about parents was depicted in frequencies and percentages. Whether family structure and place of residence have an effect on parents' perspectives of the functions of the family is analyzed through Mann Whitney-U Test. The results of the research have revealed that there is a statistically significant relationship in the sub-dimension of problem solving in favor of parents living in the city while in the sub-dimension of devoting necessary attention, statistically significant relationship is in favor of parents living in the villages. It has also been found that there is a statistically significant relationship between nuclear and extended families in the sub-dimensions of problem solving and behavior control in favor of extended families; and in the sub-dimension of devoting necessary attention in favor of nuclear families.
