Özet

This study focuses on how news related to violence against women is presented in the media. We aim to determine whether such news perpetrate the existing patriarchal cultural values or if they contribute to the resolution of such problems. Video clips of news related to violence against women were subjected to content analysis. These video clips were broadcasted on all national television channels for a period of 6 months between July 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011, and archived in Beyaz Gazete portal in Turkey. Analysis results indicate that news related to physical violence were broadcasted almost every day, and that 41 out of 104 news clips during the last 6 months were related to violence against women. Broadcasting such news has increased public awareness regarding this problem. Furthermore, results indicate that, in over half of these news clips, the news were presented in such a way that they victimized the women involved rather than disclose the perpetrators of violence. The presentation style of news related to violence against women can be considered as tabloid interpretation of news. For these reasons, we recommend that the media should broadcast news on violence within the frame of responsible journalism, avoid content that perpetrates violence against women, as well as develop and strengthen a women-centric point of view to avoid these problems.
