THE INVESTIGATION OF ACCIDENTS HOUSEKEEPING PERSONNEL ENCOUNTER IN A HOSPITAL: A TURKISH EXAMPLE

Özet

This research was planned and conducted with the aim of determining accidents which personnel working in the field of housekeeping in the hospital come across while working Out of the 330 housekeeping personnel working on the day shift in a university hospital in Ankara 184 accepted and agreed to participate in the research. Research data were collected as a result of face to face interviews with housekeeping personnel, these interviews were conducted depending on the poll form developed by the researchers, between 11th of February, 2008 and 18th of May, 2008 Data were evaluated in the programme of SPSS WIN 11.5, and chi-square analysis was made. Most of the housekeeping personnel participating in the research received in-service training regarding the causes and prevention of occupational accidents. Nineteen percent of housekeeping personnel have had an occupational accident over the recent year covered by this research People who have had accidents involving cuts rank the highest, they constitute of 65 7% the personnel having had accidents. Among the main causes of the accidents, cuts by needle and bistouries or glass while collecting wastes (65.7%) came first Among the personnel who have had accidents, those who had accidents in sickrooms and operating rooms head the table in equal proportions (28 5%) The personnel having received in-service training about the causes and prevention of occupational accidents had fewer accidents compared with the personnel who did not receive in-service training (p<0.05).
