Özet

A disaster is a relatively sudden event in a certain geographical area which can create collective tensions, cause a certain level of losses and disrupt the life of society. Earthquakes could have several harmful effects upon living beings as well as non-living things. Undoubtedly, schools are the best and most trusted places where earthquake training might be delivered. Earthquakes, its effects and guidelines for mitigating the harmful effects of earthquake are included in programs of primary school education in Turkey. As it is not possible to avoid earthquakes, the most effective method to prepare for such events is to raise awareness amongst individuals about earthquake. This qualitative study takes in account the views of primary school teacher candidates who have personally experienced earthquakes, what kinds of changes have happened in their lives after the earthquake, the effect of earthquakes on education, the importance of the earthquake training and what kinds of precautions they took to mitigate the damages caused by the earthquake.
