Özet

ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this study is to determine the

relationship between some of the sociodemographic characteristics

of the handicapped who live in the earthquake region of

Sakarya city center, and the self-esteem and levels of anxiety of

the handicapped. Participants in the study had low levels of

education, half were married, nearly half had orthopedic disabilities,

and one-third were blind. Among the reasons for handicap,

the most common were illnesses, innate handicaps, accidents,

and earthquakes. The proportion of those who became

disabled after an earthquake was 9.5 percent. Not only have most

of the disabled not yet received any medical treatment, but also

only a minority are enrolled in special education and rehabilitation

programs. Among the disabled, unemployment was common

and average income was low. Low rates of self-esteem and high

rates of trait-anxiety were found.
