Abstract:Great urban transformation has been observed in the urban life during the second half of the 20th century. The transformation in this period changed the urban space as well as the daily life and social relationship of the city dwellers. Gated communities -the subject of this study- are the symbols of both spatial transformation and the change within the social relationships in the cities based on this urban transformation. This study focuses on the socio-spatial relationship constructed in the gated communities and socio-spatial segregation. The first gated communities appeared as the living spaces serving as an isolation for the elite class from the lower classes of the society and the problems of the city, and as the commodification by privatizing the space. However, by building gated communities for the middle class, gated communities became more visible in the urban view and began to influence the urban life and the social relationships more. Hence, the social-spatial relationship constructed in the gated communities became more significant in terms of urban life. In this context, this study has two focus points. The first one is the social-spatial relationship constructed in the gated communities and the second is relationship between the gated communities and the socio-spatial segregation. The research is designed according to the qualitative research methods and the data for the research is acquired from in-depth interviews. The data is interpreted in line with the two main focuses of the research. When examining the data in the research, it is observed that networking type relationship and fluid social relationship are constructed -besides community and society type relationships- in the gated communities. Based on the data regarding the first focus point, it is concluded that the discussion is insufficient within the frame of the community-society type relationship constructed in the gated communities and new researches are needed in this subject. On the other hand, when examining the research data, the socio-spatial segregation dynamics constructed against the people living out of the housing estate is also observed in the relations within the gated communities. Based on the second focus point of this study, the gated communities set the ground for the socio-spatial segragation in the urban life while they also witness the segregation dynamics within themselves. And therefore, it is concluded that discussing the socio-spatial segregation in the gated communities within the context of individualization can bring new dimensions to the literature on the gated communities.
