Abstract:Even though there is an abundance of resources on the use of films as materials of instruction in foreign language teaching, there is a limited number of studies regarding the concrete effects they have on learning. In this interdisciplinary study, whether or not the use of authentic films in German courses contribute to the development of students? linguistic and intercultural skills is investigated by means of both qualitative and quantitative methods.First, the means by which films can be used in foreign language classes are presented. Subsequently, the habits and preferences of university students learning German as regards use of media are determined by means of a questionnaire. Based on the questionnaire results, even though students were found to be preoccupied with visual-aural media during their leisure time, it was observed that these tendencies of students were not taken into consideration in language classes, and that different materials and media other than the text book were not made use of in classes. According to the questionnaire results, the commonly faced problems regarding film use were stated and solutions were proposed; then, a study on the use of films was conducted with one group of university students for one semester. During the course of this study, the stages and observations regarding use of films were evaluated by keeping a diary. Worksheets which were prepared based on the plots of the films and which aimed to develop students? linguistic and cultural abilities were used while German movies and short films were shown in class; in addition, before and after films was watched, students were made to write essays on the plots of the films. These student assignments that were assessed according to various criteria proved to display distinct contribution of the use of German films to students? foreign language skills, specifically to their progress in writing skills and vocabulary development. A pre- and post- questionnaire was administered to the participants in the experimental group. When the results were compared, it was observed that a semester-long film study increased students? motivation and intercultural awareness. With this study based on various methods it was observed that the effectiveness of German teaching increased in classes with the use of films.Key words: Film literacy, the use of films in the teaching of German, the development of foreign language skills, intercultural awareness, intercultural learning
